DOBSON Ward councillor Sue McMillan says living locally will give her an advantage in the race for Liberal Party preselection for the federal seat of Aston.
Aston’s current representative, Liberal MP Chris Pearce, recently announced he would not contest the seat at the next election, which will be held some time between August next year and April 2011.
“Federal politics had not been something I’d thought seriously about but this is such a wonderful opportunity,” Cr McMillan said.
She did not want to ‘displace’ anyone for the opportunity to vie for a House of Representatives spot.
“But this is an open seat,” she said.
Cr McMillan would force a council by-election if she was successfully preselected and subsequently elected. “I entered my term in council with every intention of going through the four years,” she said.
“But I could do so much more at a Federal level than at a local level. I know what they’re on about. I’m a resident just as they are.”
Preselection applications close at the end of this month.
