MT EVELYN was yesterday rocked by an early morning shooting.
Residents were stunned after a 33-year-old Montrose man was gunned down at an Elizabeth Street house.
Neighbours said they didn’t hear the gun shots and were shocked to wake to the news.
Shire of Yarra Ranges councillor and Mt Evelyn resident Tim Heenan said he was “flabbergasted” by the events.
“I always felt Mt Evelyn was fairly safe but now this has happened,” Cr Heenan said.
Although the shooting is still under investigation, police believe it happened shortly after 12.40am on Monday 27 July.
Police were called to the scene following reports that a man had been shot inside a house. Boronia’s Sergeant Rhonda Roughly said one of her units was the first on the scene.
Police believe the victim was killed by a shot gun.
Sgt Roughly said police arrested a man at his Mt Evelyn house.
The 28-year-old was the taken to Mooroolbark Police Station and was interviewed during Monday by the Homicide Squad.
Police believe the pair knew each other.
Cr Heenan said although Mt Evelyn was a weird and wonderful place, he couldn’t recall anything like this happening before.
“This has unsettled a lot of people and we are all concerned this could happen in a quiet neighbourhood,” Cr Heenan said.
He is now concerned the shooting would lead to further ramifications.
“I hope it was something caused by a fight between two blokes and not a family feud or something,” he said. “If it was a fight then at least this will be the end of it… it’s the worst that could happen.”
Cr Heenan said locals didn’t expect to wake up to news on a Monday morning that someone has been shot.
“We certainly don’t expect something like this to happen here,” he said.
Cr Heenan said crime in the town was fairly spasmodic and the most residents expected was the occasional burglary or bit of vandalism.
“This has really unsettled the community… it’s just dreadful,” he said.
