CONSTRUCTION at Boronia’s Dorset Square has forced one trader to fire three staff members, following a major drop in sales.
Baird Ward councillor Peter Cole last Tuesday (28 July) asked council officers when construction would wrap up, following several complaints from businesses.
Cr Cole said one trader, who did not wish to be named, had fired two full-time staff and one part-time worker since December following a 40 per cent decline in sales because the construction made it difficult to enter the store.
“I have asked what I can do to be of support and the owner has said the damage has been done,” Cr Cole said.
“He cannot think of anything we can do except to finish the works and let Dorset Square rest in peace of construction after two years of works.”
Acting City Development director Paul Dickie said the council remained on track to complete ‘the bulk of construction works’ by the end of the month.
Mr Dickie said completing work in sections and at night minimised disruptions to traders and shoppers and there was an on-site office and a customer liaison officer. He said the final upgrade to works would improve trade and business to Dorset Square.
