Troppo for trees

HILLS schools last week did their bit for the environment to mark this year’s National Tree Day.
Upwey South preschoolers last Friday (31 July) got their hands – and clothing – dirty to plant apple, pear and lemon trees for future kinder goers.
Preschool committee president Jude Craig said the kids would care for the trees as they grew.
Ms Craig said the new trees were another step in the kinder going green.
It has a water tank, herb and vegie patch, weed removal, native planting and a worm farm on the go.
The preschool is now looking for people to donate old car tyres for its vegie patch by calling Jude on 9754 7040.
Mater Christi students also did their bit for the environment, planting 50 indigenous trees along the railway corridor in Belgrave, near Dickinson Street.
Teacher Gloria Bower said the students were also part of a biodiversity team which had been working in the area for more than 12 months pulling out weeds.
“By improving our local diversity, we are empowering our students to address and begin to resolve environmental issues,” she said.
