KALLISTA’s environmental warrior Jo Tenner is hoping to take her call for action on climate change all the way to Spring Street.
She has been announced as the Greens Party candidate for Monbulk in the 2010 State Government elections.
Ms Tenner said the key issues for the region were global warming and the need for better public transport options in the south-east.
The campaign will kick-start on Sunday with screening of the climate change blockbuster called The Age of Stupid.
The new cinema documentary stars Oscar nominated actor Pete Postlethwaite who play an old man living in a devastated world of 2055 who asks himself why did we, in 2009, not heed all the warnings about climate change and act while we had the chance.
Ms Tenner said a hotter, drier climate has dangerous consequences for hills communities.
“Climate change will usher in a regime of more frequent and severe fire weather…failure to act swiftly on it will sentence our communities to an intolerable and irreversible fate,” she said.
“It’s a real and present danger for the communities that make up the Monbulk electorate.”
Ms Tenner is basing her election campaign around the need for action.
“We have the capability to reduce climate change, we just need the political will to look after our communities,” she said.
Ms Tenner is not only a local environmental warrior but has also been endorsed by Al Gore as a trained climate ambassador.
“I am excited and energised by this opportunity to represent the Greens and look forward to running a strong campaign in Monbulk,” she said.
The campaign launch and screening of The Age of Stupid will air on Sunday at Upwey Community Hall, 1433 Burwood Highway, Upwey, from 6.30pm.
