WATER leaks and burst pipes are on the increase across the hills.
The ongoing drought has played havoc with water pipes but Yarra Valley Water said extra resources were in place for the summer peak ahead.
Yarra Valley Water managing director Tony Kelly said incidents most often occurred when weather conditions changed suddenly.
Mr Kelly said hot weather and low rainfall caused clay soil to dry and contract and pull pipes out of alignment and split them. “Similarly, wet conditions can cause the soil to expand, again causing pipes to shift,” he said.
Yarra Valley Water has reduced excessive water pressure, replaced leaking pipe work and connections and worked to detect more leaks, Mr Kelly said. He said reported leaks were prioritised.
