GLEN Darcey is being brave and sacrificing his locks for the World’s Greatest Shave.
The Menzies Creek man and his extended family are joining the challenge to help raise cash and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.
But for this family it’s more than just a good cause.
Their three-year-old nephew, Henry Dewar has been battling leukaemia for more than 14 months.
The team known as Hairless 4 Henry is taking part in the shave for the second year in a row.
Mr Darcey said the fundraiser was the one thing the family could do to help young Henry. “There is not a lot we can do to take away the heartache they go through everyday, but by supporting the foundation we are helping to ensure that they and other children and families get the help and support they so desperately need,” he said.
In 2010, it is expected more than 2480 Victorians will be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder or cancer.
Henry’s aunt, Fiona Knight will be colouring her hair for the cause and her two sons will be taking the plunge and braving the shave.
She said last year the group raised more than $14,000 and was hoping to do even better this year.
But the team has only raised $370 so far.
“We won’t know until the day how much we will make,” Mr Darcey said.
The big shave will be held at the Portsea Hotel on Saturday 13 March from noon until 2pm. Anyone wanting to make a donation to the team can contact Fiona on 0433 122 698 or by logging onto the www.worldsgreatestshave.com.
