Vandals wreck school

MOUNT Evelyn Primary School has been left with a damage bill of more than $15,000 after vandals went on a rampage.
Police were called to the school shortly after 6am on 5 April when an alarm sounded.
School principal Phil Comport, who was shocked by the ‘wanton’ destruction, said vandals gained access to one of the school’s new buildings and smashed nine windows.
This comes as the school’s $9 million long-awaited upgrade nears completion.
Police said the offenders also caused extensive damage to computers and light fittings.
Mr Comport told the Mail he couldn’t believe what had happened.
“I can’t believe anyone would do such wanton damage to a wonderful new building,” he said.
The vandals had left a trail of destruction in the school’s new art room.
Mr Comport said the damage had been repaired and police were continuing investigations. He said the offenders were lucky to escape after setting off the school’s silent alarm.
Mr Comport said the alarm alerted authorities and police were on the scene within minutes.
He spent most of last week organising tradesmen to repair the damage.
Mr Comport said nothing like this had happened at the school for a long time.
“We were just shocked by the destruction,” Mr Comport added.
Mr Comport said nothing was stolen during the raid but the vandals left a big mess.
“We are very keen for anyone who knows anything to come forward and help us find the culprits,” he said.
Police are calling on anyone who may have seen or heard anything to contact them on 9736 2473.
