A premier read

By Tania Martin
MOUNT Evelyn youngsters can now be found buried in a mountain of books.
More than 234 Mount Evelyn Primary School students are proud to be called bookworms this month as they take up the 2010 Premiers’ Reading Challenge.
Premier John Brumby has challenged students from Prep to Year 10 from across the state to beat last year’s record of reading more than 3.8 millions books.
Mount Evelyn Primary School students have so far read 1574 books with a further 84 almost complete.
Student, Angus, has already completed 41 books.
He said his favourite so far had been Dog Days from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney.
Angus said he enjoyed the thrill of sitting back and enjoying a good book.
“I’ve enjoyed the challenge,” he said.
School spokeswoman Nicky Condello said the challenge was a great way to promote a love of books and reading for the students.
She said it also helped to foster good literacy skills.
“Some students have also been reviewing the books they have completed, to share with fellow students and assisting with future book list selection and readings,” Ms Condello said.
Students have until 31 August to read as many books as they can.
