POLICE have warned motorists to take care on the road following a spate of crashes across the hills.
The warning came after a woman and her three children narrowly escaped serious injury on Wednesday 7 July when the car they were travelling in rolled over.
Kalorama and Olinda CFA crews were called to the scene of the accident on the corner of Mt Dandenong Tourist Road and Selwyn Lane, Mt Dandenong.
Olinda firefighter Steve Walker said local residents and people passing had rushed to the aid of the family.
“By the time we got there, they had been rescued through the sun roof of the car,” he said.
“This one is a credit to the passers-by.” Mooroolbark police officer, Leading Senior Constable Daniel Magee said one of the children sustained minor cuts and bruises and was taken to the Maroondah Hospital for observation.
Police believe the accident was caused by bad weather conditions and possibly driver fatigue.
“It was like pea soup out there…the fog was terrible,” Leading Sen Const Magee said.
He said drivers needed to pay more attention and start driving to the winter conditions.
“People are driving like we are having a mild winter, but we are having the worst conditions we have seen in five or six years with more intense fog and wet weather,” Leading Sen Const Magee said.
