Cheap as chips

CASEY people can have their pets microchipped at a special occasion next month.
The City of Casey, in partnership with the Lost Dogs Home in Cranbourne, is running a microchipping day on Saturday, 2 April and encourages Casey residents to have their pets microchipped for just $25 per animal on the day.
Each microchip is inserted by a veterinarian and the animal will feel no pain or discomfort.
Last year more than 2000 cats and dogs were lost and impounded in the municipality and a small microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is the best way to be reunited with your pet if is lost.
A microchip contains a barcode linked to its owner’s contact details that are recorded on the Central Animal Records database.
The animal can then be permanently identified Australia-wide and can be safely returned to its owner, even if its collar or council ID has come off.
It is also important that residents update this information if they move house.
Since 1 May 2007 Victorian legislation has required that all newly registered animals are to be microchipped. Lower council registration fees apply for microchipped pets.
The microchip day will take place from 10am until 1pm at the Lost Dogs Home Cranbourne on 920 Thompsons Road, Cranbourne West. Bookings are essential.
