CRANBOURNE bowlers were faced with wild and wintry conditions Saturday in round eight of Metro pennant competition. Many games were washed out around town and those that were played did so on slow, saturated greens. All six Cranbourne teams were fortunate enough to finish their games with results split down the middle.
The top side played away in humid conditions against Burden Park on a surprisingly free-running green. As expected, the game was very close all day. Ray Travica’s rink of Corbin Barrenger, Peter Hodgson and Barry Thomas played brilliantly and built a big lead despite dropping six shots in the first two ends.
Travica’s rink covered the deficit on Chris Fox’s rink, while the scores on the rinks of Lyn Quigg and Ron Lyfield gave Cranbourne a slender lead.
Unfortunately the weather changed for the worse over the final few ends with heavy rain forcing players to leave the green. After the deluge, the opposition adapted quickly to the soggy conditions and played some big bowls to outscore the Cranbourne side, winning by seven shots overall.
The second side had an exciting finish against the Noble Park top side, picking up five shots apiece on two rinks of the final end. These scores were enough to get the Cranbourne side over the line, winning on three of the four rinks.
The Cranbourne third side had a disappointing loss away against Berwick (4), despite winning on two of four rinks.
A big win at home by Steve Boyd’s rink of John Stanley, Rein Croymans and Lou Magri guaranteed a victory for the fourth side against Hampton (2).
The Cranny fifth side suffered a narrow loss to Berwick (6) at home, but the sixth side had a comfortable win against Glen Eira McKinnon (3), winning on all four rinks.
