STATE Health Minister David Davis has warned hills residents to expect Victoria’s summer heat to cause ongoing health concerns.
Mr Davis said Victoria’s heat health alert system would be put to the test as temperatures continued to soar.
“Already this month, one statewide heat health alert has been issued to allow the health and aged care sector, emergency services and local government authorities to prepare for extreme temperatures,” he said.
Mr Davis said older people over the age of 65 and those living alone at home were some of the most likely to present to hospital emergency departments with heat-related illness.
“It is important for all Victorians to prepare for hot weather so that they know how to stay healthy in the heat,” he said.
“In hot weather, community members should take care of themselves and check on older, sick and frail relatives, friends and neighbours who may need help coping with the heat.”
The State Government has urged residents to drink plenty of water; spend as much time as possible in cool or air-conditioned buildings; close curtains and blinds during the heat of the day; eat smaller, cold meals more often; and avoid strenuous activity.
Mr Davis said heat-related conditions can range from mild rashes or cramps, to heat stroke – which can be fatal.
“Importantly, heat may worsen the condition of someone who already has a heart condition such as heart disease,” he said.
