COCKATOO is set to have a new supermarket, following a decision to re-zone land in the township to make way for developments, including a car park.
Cardinia Shire councillors moved to approve the amendment to the planning scheme, which would see residential land at 2-6 and 8 Rouen Road changed to a business zone.
A design and development overlay and vegetation protection overlay would also be deleted from part of the land.
According to the report to council, two of the six submissions received in relation to the amendment raised concern surrounding access to the supermarket via Fairbridge Lane.
In its submission, the Cockatoo Township Committee advised delivery times should be restricted to normal business hours and that Fairbridge Lane should be widened to allow suitable access to the site.
Lorian Heights Pty Ltd, owner of adjacent post office land, also raised concerns about increased traffic flow along Fairbridge Lane.
In its report, the council resolved to undertake minor road works and place parking restrictions to mitigate these concerns.
Councillor Graeme Legge said the supermarket and car park would have economic and social benefits for Cockatoo, possibly creating more jobs.
He said the “small supermarket” of about 1700 square metres would provide “an improved range of retail services for local residents.”
Councillor Brett Owen agreed.
“I am really pleased that through consultation the concerns of the adjoining residential owners and the Cockatoo Township Committee have been addressed,” Cr Owen said.
“I think this is a real win for the Cockatoo community to have a supermarket such as this proposed.”
