THE Mount Evelyn RSL is looking for volunteers to take elderly veterans to and from the RSL hall while it investigates the possibility of purchasing a bus.
The RSL is still home to many World War II and Vietnam veterans, some of whom are now unable to get out and about due to mobility issues.
President Roger Boness said the RSL was looking for people with a Thursday afternoon to spare to take these veterans from their home to the hall on Birmingham Road to take part in afternoon activities with other members.
Members of the club gather once a week to socialise, have afternoon tea and play games such as billiards and bowls.
About 10 ex-servicemen and dependants currently get together, and Mr Boness hopes this number would increase.
“We aim to include all of our members, some of whom through personal disability are largely left at home or in their nursing home and bring them up to Thursday activities,” he said.
“We find many of them who were not engaged in recent conflict tend to have mobility problems, and without assistance, cannot be included and we want to make sure they are not left isolated.”
Mr Boness said the RSL was also hoping to buy a bus, which would be used for various purposes such as helping those members get to and from the hall, taking them out shopping or to medical appointments and to help with anything else they required.
Anyone who would like to help out can contact Roger Boness at the Mount Evelyn RSL on 9737 0767.
