BELGRAVE’S rich history is now clearly signposted for visitors and locals alike to enjoy.
Belgrave Region Action Group (BRAG) officially launched its self-guided historical walk on 19 July.
There are 16 plaques installed around the town to highlight significant historical landmarks and moments, and a flyer to take people on a journey through Belgrave’s evolution.
BRAG’s Liz Beaton said the morning was absolutely superb and there was a terrific turnout. The group bought its first plaque in 2007 and presented it to the Cameo.
“Then we didn’t have any money,” Ms Beaton said.
It last year received two grants – $4000 from the State Government’s Local History Grants program and one from Yarra Ranges Council – and will apply for more cash so it can add plaques to the walk.
“It’s something that will always grow,” Ms Beaton said.
There are 23 historical locations listed on the flyer, which is now available from the Dandenong Ranges Tourist Information Centre, 1211 Burwood Highway, Upper Ferntree Gully, and is making its way to various Belgrave locations.
Ms Beaton is keen to learn more about several landmarks, particularly the town’s rotunda, so she can continue to add to the flyer and urged any locals with information to contact her.
Eastern Region MP Edward O’Donohue attended the launch and congratulated BRAG for its hard work to complete the project and their dedication to preserving and sharing Belgrave’s history.
Lyster Ward councillor Samantha Dunn encouraged the community to pick up a flyer.
“It’s terrific to remind people of the history of Belgrave and its evolution,” she said.
“It’s great to see people learn about the town’s heritage.”
BRAG’s next project will be to spruce up Belgrave Town Park with mosaics, and it’s calling on interested artists to lend a hand.
