FERNTREE Gully’s Carmen Marton narrowly missed out on a medal in Taekwondo at the Olympics.
She made her way through to the semi-finals of the women’s 67 kilogram competition after defeating Iran’s Sousan Hajipourgoli and Sweden’s Elin Johansson, but was beaten in her bronze medal match against Turkey’s Nur Tatur 6-0.
Ms Marton’s fiancée and Australia’s male competitor in Taekwondo Safwan Khalil also missed out on a bronze medal, losing to Russia’s Alexey Denisenko 3-1.
The 26-year-old expressed her disappointment in missing out on a medal and her appreciation for all the support she has received via her Facebook page.
“(It’s) such a mixture of feelings – yes, I am upset and sad that my day is over, I really believed I could bring home a medal and I truly tried with all of my heart and might to do so,” she said.
“I want you all to know that I am so proud to have been given the opportunity to represent my country at the Olympics and to have had so much positive support along the way.
“Thank you all for making this such a wonderful memory. It has been an incredible journey. Both Safwan and myself did the absolute best we could – alas, the bronze medals slipped through our fingers.”
