Tip of the spear

By CASEY NEILL
FERNTREE Gully athlete Madeleine Hogan claimed a bronze medal in the F46 javelin at the London Paralympic Games on Sunday.
Positioned fourth after five rounds, the 23-year-old’s final attempt was a personal-best 38.85 metres and enough to clinch third place.
Earlier this year Hogan, who was born without a left hand, told the Mail all she really wanted to achieve at the games was a personal best.
“That should be enough to put me on the dais,” she said.
Four years ago she picked up a bronze medal at the Beijing games and in March last year took home gold at the International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships in New Zealand.
Hogan has a background in cricket and played for the Victorian able-bodied squad in her teens. Her javelin coach John Eden spotted her competing at a school athletics day and eventually convinced her to leave cricket for athletics.
“I realised I wanted to represent Australia, to go higher,” she said.
