UPWEY Fire Brigade is launching a major recruitment campaign to prepare for the coming fire season and keep Upwey and surrounds safe.
Brigade captain Paul Mather hopes the campaign will produce new members to become part of his important and highly-valued team.
“We are the oldest brigade in the area and have always enjoyed strong membership,” he said.
“However, a combination of increased operational skill pre-requisites introduced in recent years and a greater natural attrition due to employment and personal pressures and lifestyles have impacted on our membership.
“The brigade is not only looking to recruit new members to fight fires, but also to assist in administrative activities, promotions, fundraising, education programs and younger members to join our junior fire brigade.”
Mr Mather said the Upwey area had encountered uncontrolled wildfires and major structure fires in the past, and these would no doubt occur again.
“We now feel it is necessary to enhance our membership to maintain our response and loss mitigation capability,” he said.
The campaign will feature an information evening at the fire station, 134 Old Belgrave Road, Upwey, on Thursday 13 September at 7.30pm.
Mr Mather said this was an opportunity for all community-minded residents to become involved and find out what it took to become a volunteer. He said membership offered fresh challenges, and a chance to meet new people and give something back to the local community.
The brigade responds to about 170 calls per year and boasts modern vehicles and equipment including a thermal imaging camera.
