MOUNT Evelyn’s new Wray Crescent pedestrian lights were finally switched on last Wednesday 5 September.
The Mail earlier this year reported that residents feared for their safety after Yarra Ranges Council installed the lights but for months left them un-operational.
In June Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce president Kathie Freeman said she was told the lights, outside Morrisons, were not working due to technical problems.
She said residents had reported near-misses on foot at the crossing because it was creating confusion for drivers and pedestrians.
Yarra Ranges Council’s environment and engineering director Mark Varmalis said the shire had submitted information SP AusNet and AGL needed to connect the lights to power and was waiting on the companies to do so.
“It’s a bit more of a complicated process than we first anticipated and we’re working through all issues with service authorities and an electricity supplier,” he said.
“We have put additional signage up to make sure people know that’s the right place to cross and in the meantime we will try and get the lights up and running as soon as possible.”
