MONBULK couple Ian and Margaret Ross are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on 20 September.
They’ll mark the diamond milestone with a meal with their family at Yering Station.
Ian and Margaret moved to Silvan in 1957 and operated the Silvan General Store and Newsagents.
They soon became heavily involved in the community and reflected on this as they prepared to begin their seventh decade of marriage.
They both enjoyed interviewing people and researching the history of Silvan State School to produce the centenary book in 1976.
Margaret was on the mother’s club at the state school and Mount Evelyn kinder, was with the Monbulk Elderly Citizens Club and is now a Monbulk CWA member.
She was the Yarra Glen Ladies Bowls Section secretary and played pennant for Yarra Glen, then joined the Monbulk Bowling Club and played in a premiership team.
Ian said she won many trophies over the years but had now retired from the sport and is happy with her interest in CWA.
Ian has been involved in many committees during his time in Silvan.
He helped re-start the Silvan Tennis Club after it had been disbanded for many years, was the record secretary for the Upper Yarra Tennis Association for 10 years and was made a life member.
Ian played tennis and cricket for Silvan and was the football club secretary for five years. He was also on the school committee and the hall committee and was Yarra Glen Bowling Club president for two years.
He was a councillor for the Royal Victorian Bowls Association for four years and Group 7 president for two years, a foundation member of the Bowls Past Presidents Association’s Yarra Valley Group and served on the State Committee of the Bowls Past Presidents Association of Victoria for about 14 years.
