A MT Dandenong man, his girlfriend, and his dog had a lucky escape when his car careered 30 metres down a steep embankment off Mt Dandenong Tourist Road in Upper Ferntree Gully about 8.30pm on Saturday night.
Olinda Sergeant Andrew Herdman said the driver, 39, failed to make a slight left-hand bend, crossed over the centreline and left the road.
The green Holden Commodore collided with two small trees, crushed bushes, dislodged large rocks, and came to rest just above homes in Glassford Avenue.
CFA brigades from Upper Ferntree Gully, Upwey, Monbulk and Dandenong Rescue successfully winched the driver and passenger, 25, down the steep, slippery and uneven slope to waiting ambulances.
“The car’s occupants were conveyed to the The Alfred hospital suffering head, neck and spinal injuries,” Sgt Herdman said.
The driver’s dog was also in the car. Local residents cared for it during the rescue and it’s now at the Yarra Ranges pound.
“Police are investigating if fatigue, alcohol or drugs were a factor in this accident,” Sgt Herdman said.
He urged witnesses to call Olinda Police on 9751 1241.
