FIREFIGHTERS from Macclesfield Fire Brigade will be sporting shiny bald heads when they lose their hair for the World’s Greatest Shave next month.
Six blokes from the brigade have signed up to shave their head, along with eight ladies who will be colouring their hair for the cause.
Organiser Paul Huntington said while it was their first time doing the fundraiser, he hoped to get most of their firefighters on board.
“We’re hoping the word spreads through the brigade and we get more people involved,” he said.
“It’s going to be new for all of us – none of us have been bald before so there are going to be lots of white heads.”
The brigade has set a target of $1000 but Mr Huntington said members were aiming to raise at least $2500.
He said it was a great way for the volunteers to get involved in something other than just fighting fires.
“We just thought it was a good cause – we spend so much time advertising for ourselves sometimes it’s nice to help another organisation,” he said.
“Our time is limited so we’re just doing what we can.”
The team has planned to hold the event on Saturday 23 March with a barbecue.
Despite the day being more than a month away, some were already feeling the pressure.
And Mr Huntington said it wasn’t just the people getting shaved that were getting worried either.
“Everyone’s put on a very brave face, but it’s eight weeks out and I’m feeling a bit nervous,” he said.
“I’m pretty nervous, I’m not confident of many things but I’m pretty confident I don’t have a head shaped for baldness so it’s going to be very interesting.
“It’s more partners and families that are more nervous, we had a lot of girlfriends and mums that haven’t been terribly impressed by the idea.
“They liked the cause but would’ve preferred if someone else was doing it.”
The Macclesfield Fire Brigade will use its Facebook page to update the public on its fundraising progress.
