Bugged by beauty

By JESSE GRAHAM

FOR SOME people, the thought of moths is enough to make stomachs churn, but Menzies Creek resident Bree Thomas sees them as an inspiration.
Ms Thomas, 36, opened her first ever solo exhibition at Belgrave’s Limerence boutique and gallery on Friday 3 May, featuring numerous pen drawings of moths, insects and forest life.
She said that moths are a re-occurring subject in her artworks.
“I have a particular fascination with them that I can’t seem to get past – all bugs interest me,” she said.
“I try to work with what I can see, focusing on things that others might not see.
“Moths do fit into that – most people get wrapped up in dragonflies and butterflies, but moths are absolutely beautiful.”
Ms Thomas said that her life was busy, between home-schooling her youngest child, looking after her pets and having two teenagers in high school.
She said that one of the reasons she worked with pens was because they were portable and worked with her day-to-day schedule.
“This means I can do art anywhere, anytime,” she said.
“I can do it on a bushwalk, on holidays – it makes things easier.
“I only have to cart around a small amount of art materials.”
Ms Thomas has submitted pieces to group exhibitions before, but her current exhibition at Limerence is her first solo exhibition.
She also established herself last year by winning Limerence’s annual Th’INK Tank competition, where hills residents submit designs to be judged and possibly printed onto clothing for sale.
Her exhibition runs until Wednesday 29 May at Limerence at 2/1642 Burwood Highway, Belgrave, from 10am-5pm Tuesday to Saturday.
