PUFFING Billy’s Climax Locomotive was launched on Sunday 8 September after 12 years of restoration by the Puffing Billy preservation Society.
Various works were done to the No. 1694 locomotive including major work on the boiler, frames, gears and brakes, along with new wheels and axles.
Puffing Billy Preservation Society president Jeff Goodwin said more than 2500 volunteer hours were put into restoring the locomotive, as well as significant money.
“The restoration process has cost $700,000 which is being raised via a number of fund-raising initiatives including proceeds from the ‘Great Train Race’ and the ‘861 Footplate Experience’ trains,” he said.
“There is still a significant amount outstanding re the associated loans we have incurred, so if anyone wishes to contribute, our ‘Coffee for the Climax’ fund-raising campaign is still running.”
During the launch, the society ran a special train hauled by the locomotive, which drove through a specially made banner and was greeted by more than 150 train enthusiasts.
“Everyone here at the railway is truly excited to have this locomotive back in service and we’re looking forward to seeing it regularly running through the Puffing Billy corridor again,” Mr Goodwin said.
The Climax is one of only four Climax locomotives that are still operation, but the other three are in the United States.
It is the only intact survivor of more than 50 Victorian timber tramway steam locomotives and is the only wood-burning locomotive at Puffing Billy Railway.
“We were thrilled to welcome the Climax 1694 Locomotive back especially as it coincided with the 85th anniversary of when it first entered service,” Mr Goodwin said.
