Spring show winner

By EMMA SUN

SELBY’S master baker has proven his scones are the one to beat, taking out first place at the Royal Melbourne Show for the second year in a row.
Despite being a diabetic, Graeme Luke has been able to perfect his recipe to take out the number one place in the open section over 18 other entrants.
It is his third win at the show, having taken out first in the novice section previously.
Mr Luke said he was elated about the win.
“I wasn’t going to put an entry in, as I wanted to give someone else a go, but I decided to have another bash because it’s contagious,” he said.
“I guess it’s nice that someone from the hills wins the scones because there are a lot of scone places around.”
Mr Luke is a lollipop man who supervises school children crossing the road on the corner of Burwood Highway and Dawson Street in Upper Ferntree Gully.
In his spare time, he would bake scones for fundraising drives to help out the local community.
“I’m with the Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade so I give some to the local Selby Fire Brigade since I’ve shifted up here for their functions,” he said.
“They seem pretty pleased to get them and I will probably do the same this year, give some to the fire brigade and anyone else who wants them.
“I might also help out at the Selby Men’s Shed.”
Mr Luke said it was during spring that he gets the urges to bake scones.
He said it was wonderful to win at the show and looked forward to continuing his baking.
“It’s nice to win something because it picks you up a little bit and it gives you an ego boost,” he said.
“I’d like to thank the community for their support.”
