SMOKE will be visible from south-eastern suburbs including Belgrave as the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) conducts a planned burn at Lysterfield Park.
DEPI East Metropolitan district manager Dan White said about 40 fire-fighters and support staff will be carrying out a 67.7 hectare burn near Lamberts Track in Lysterfield around lunchtime today.
“The planned burn will continue into the early evening and we will have fire-fighters patrolling overnight and in the coming days,” he said.
“Smoke will be visible from nearby suburbs including Belgrave.
“This burn is part of an integrated plan to reduce bushfire risk to people, property and communities.”
Mr White said while the burn today is contained within the park, it will be taking place close to homes, roads and recreational facilities.
The DEPI are working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to monitor conditions with planned burning carefully managed to minimise impacts in this area.
“Access to mountain bike and walking tracks may be restricted in areas of the park to ensure the burn is carried out safely,” Mr White said.
“We understand it is concerning for residents to see smoke following an intense bushfire season however Victoria’s weather is always changing and we need to take the opportunity to reduce fuel loads whenever conditions are safe.
“I would like to thank local residents for their co-operation and understanding as we carry out this important work.”
