Planned burns mean smoky days ahead

By REBECCA BILLS

SMOKE will be visible across the Hills tomorrow as the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) conducts planned burns in the Dandenongs.
DEPI East Metropolitan district manager Dan White said their crews will be making the most of stable conditions to complete burns in several priority areas in the next few days that will result in some smoke across Melbourne.
“On Thursday we will be doing several asset protection burns in the Dandenongs including Sassafras, Mount Dandenong and Kalorama,” he said.
“The planned burn on top of Mount Dandenong at SkyHigh observation area will be visible in the evening from eastern and inner Melbourne as well as from Canterbury Road and surrounding areas during the day.
“As we are completing several burns in a short period of time smoke will accumulate and if people experience any symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure, they should seek medical advice or call Nurse-on-Call on 1300 606 024.”
Mr White said they understand that it is concerning for people to see smoke following an intense bushfire season.
“Victoria’s weather is always changing and we need to take the opportunity to reduce fuel loads whenever the conditions make it safe to do so,” he said.
For more information on where planned burns are scheduled, go to www.depi.vic.gov.au/burnsmap or call the Victoria Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.
