Four push for the front

Wandin's Kate Checkley looks for an opening.

YVMDFNL Wrap 26 July
What another week of football and netball in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football Netball League.
Division 1 has four teams sitting equal on top of the ladder – Wandin, Monbulk Upwey Tecoma and Olinda Ferny Creek.
Division 2 has Seville one game clear of Yarra Glen but all that could change next week.
Netball sees Upwey Tecoma one game clear of Wandin and Yarra Glen six points clear of Seville.
The games next week have a lot riding on them as Wandin takes on Upwey Tecoma while Seville takes on Yarra Glen in both football and netball.

SENIORS DIVISION 1
Healesville 11.9 (75) d Mount Evelyn 10.9 (69)
This was an outstanding battle from start to finish with the lead never getting beyond six points for the majority of the game.
The first quarter was goal for goal and Healesville held a narrow two-point advantage at the first
break.
The second long break saw a one-goal advantage.
The second at three quarter time were all tied and the scene was set for a great last quarter.
There weren’t a lot of goals kicked in the last term but it was Healesville that kicked the critical goal that gave the team the all-important lead and it was able to hold on to it until the final siren to record a fantastic victory and put a dent in Mount Evelyn’s finals aspirations.
Best
Healesville: S. Donkin (3), B. Hodic, B. Clark.
Mount Evelyn: M. Martin (4), D. Broadway, C. Urquhart.

Warburton Millgrove 10.16 (76) d Belgrave 3.10 (28)
Warburton was terrific in its win over Belgrave holding its opponents to just one goal after quarter time.
Warby held just a one-goal lead at the first change but it was all its game after that.
They stretched that lead to 17 points at half time and then held Belgrave goalless in the second half to run away with the game and win by a resounding 48 points in what was a dominating display despite the low scoring.
Best
Warburton Millgrove: T. McKail (2), L. Barnard (1), M. Wappett.
Belgrave: E. Clasby (1), T. Stubley, J. Brown.

Wandin 12.19 (91) d Monbulk 5.10 (40)
Wandin has replaced Monbulk on the top of the ladder after handing it a resounding 51-point defeat.
Wandin set its win up in the first term with a seven-goal to one quarter that Monbulk just couldn’t recover from.
The lead was extended to 53 points by half time and this game was well and truly in Wandin’s keeping. The second was an even battle and Monbulk did battle it out but it was simply outclassed in the early stages of the game and that was the difference in the end.
Best
Wandin: K. Talevski (6), H. Dudink (1), J. Messis (1).
Monbulk: S. Lucas (3), S. Van Seters, T. Wragg.

Olinda Ferny Creek 7.13 (55) d Emerald 1.3 (9)
Emerald may have claimed a couple of big scalps this season but it was no match for Olinda.
This game was extremely ugly in the first term without a goal scored but it was Olinda that had its chances booting five behinds while Emerald didn’t even trouble the scoreboard.
The second Olinda booted three goals to one to grab a 20-point half time lead.
The better side scored with relative ease and if they were a little more efficient forward they could have won by more than their eventual 46 point margin.
Best
Olinda Ferny Creek: G. Stevens (1), P. Rosier, M. Wright.
Emerald: N. Callanan, C. Porter, M. Thompson.

Upwey Tecoma 8.8 (56) d Woori Yallock 7.12 (54)
This was the Grand Final replay from last season and this time the result was reversed as Upwey was able to hold on to win a great encounter that was in the balance throughout the four quarters.
Upwey held the early advantage at the first break with a 10-point lead before Woori narrowed that gap to just three points at half time.
The next quarter saw Upwey win more of the ball and it managed an inaccurate 3.5 to 2.2 for the term to grab a 12 point lead at the final change.
The last quarter was a real battle for Upwey because it couldn’t score and Woori was coming hard.
They had their chances scoring 2.4 and although Upwey didn’t score in the last quarter it was still good enough to hold on to win by a nailbiting two points.
Best
Upwey Tecoma: D. Sloane (2), T. Robinson (2), J. Waters (1).
Woori Yallock: D. Mock, J. Williams, M. Witkowski.

DIVISION 1 A GRADE NETBALL

Wandin was superb and was just a class above all day.
It opened the day with a 23-goal to nil first quarter and didn’t let up for the rest of the game.
Monbulk did get on the board in the second with six goals but Wandin shot 17 goals to go into half-time with a 34-goal lead.

Belgrave did win this game and win it well but Warby did at least make them work hard for their goals.
Belgrave opened the day well with a 17 goal to nine first quarter and stretched that lead to 13 goals by half time.
The second half was more of the same with Warby battling hard but Belgrave just had a touch more class that saw it score more frequently and run out 25 goal victors.
Best
Belgrave: Lauren Bennett (34), Carmen Timms (23), Donna Marcus.
Warburton Millgrove: Jaime Lord, Karly Wappett, Kellie Davidson.

Upwey Tecoma 68 d Woori Yallock 23
This was just a comprehensive four quarter performance from Upwey which was in red hot form and unfortunately for Woori Yallock they suffered the brunt of it.
