A democratic advocacy group is coming to Selby to help encourage community involvement in local and federal politics.
Voices of Indi (VOI) will hold a free public forum at Selby Community House on Tuesday 19 August to explain how people can voice their opinion about decisions affecting them in their electorate.
VOI vice president Denis Ginnivan said the group is not looking to influence policy but give communities the tools and strategies they need to have their concerns heard at a local and federal level.
“What is sometimes missing is a voice from average people in the community.
“The presentation will explain how regional communities can do something as opposed to doing nothing.
“Instead of feeling angry, people should engage at a community level,” he said.
VOI formed during the last federal election when it instigated a grass roots community campaign which successfully removed Sophie Mirabella from the safe Liberal seat of Indi.
Ms Mirabella held the seat for almost 12 years but lost it to independent candidate Cathy McGowan with an historic swing of more than 9 per cent.
Since taking the seat Ms McGowan has been well received by her electorate on one occasion taking to the streets about the 2014 budget update earlier this year.
Forum organiser Karl Williams said VOI was formed out of concern that some MPs put political interests above those of their electorates.
“Nowadays, many feel that our elected representative puts too high a priority on their own position and career within their political party and is less inclined to represent the community’s voice.
“This is what propelled the Voices for Indi movement which is now spreading its reach to empower dedicated independent candidates to challenge the political mainstream throughout Australia.”
Since the group formed, VOI has been in high demand around the country and members have been invited to speak at more than 20 electorates across Australia.
VOI speakers Denis Ginnivan and Tony Lane will speak at the Selby Community House from 7pm on 19 August.
The group is asking for a gold coin donation to cover the cost of a light supper provided on the night.
