FIRST-TIME grand final contenders Mount Evelyn under-16s faced a mammoth task to stem the grand final run of three-time premiership side Emerald Black in the final match of the DRJFL 2014 series at Woori Yallock on Sunday.
The Emerald Black experience shone through in the end, but Mount Evelyn pushed every opportunity and to their credit, never gave up.
“Mount Evelyn was clearly the second best team all year with all the under-16s top sides providing great games of football during the season,” DRJFL president John Myers said.
Mount Evelyn coach Adam Easton congratulated the boys on a fantastic effort.
“None of you played in a grand final before and I could not be more proud as a coach with your efforts today,” he said.
Emerald coach added his congratulations saying the team had put up a sensational fight.
“You boys have really taken it up to us all three times we’ve played you and have been our best opposition all year,” he said.
Mount Evelyn’s Mitchell Williams was named best opposition player.
The final scores were Emerald Black 10.12 (72) to Mount Evelyn 7.11 (53).
