Station bomb

By MELISSA MEEHAN

FORENSIC investigators are still investigating a petrol bomb attack on the Monbulk police station last week.
Monbulk Sergeant Mark Knight said the Molotov cocktail was thrown through a window of the station’s garage not long after 3.20am on Tuesday morning.
The station was unmanned at the time, but alarms notified police of the issue.
The Mail broke the news of the attack on Tuesday morning online, and while there was no serious damage to the building or the new police car parked in the garage, police were busy investigating any leads they could find.
There were clear signs of damage with a broken window surrounded by charred bricks on Tuesday.
Sgt Knight said he believed those responsible for the petrol bomb attack had broken into a shed behind the Monbulk RSL and removed some chairs and used them to see over the fence surrounding the police station.
“We’re lucky that it missed the car,” he said.
“The damage was minimised, but we are working hard to find the culprits.”
Police are also investigating a number of events that occurred on the same night, but cannot confirm whether they are linked.
They include a burglary at The Patch General Store where money was stolen and the inside ransacked.
Owner Andrew Collins said he believed the thieves were looking for money and cigarettes.
“Our alarm went off about 3am,” Mr Collins said.
“But when I got there about 10 minutes later, they were gone.”
Mr Collins said the thieves took some money from the store, all coins, and customers were finding 20 cent and 10 cent pieces along the footpath to the building.
A burnt out car was also found along the Monbulk – Emerald Road and towed away for forensic examination.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Yarra Ranges CIU on 9739 2300 or Monbulk police on 9756 6266.
