Marathon swim for MS

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM

A 24-HOUR Megaswim for MS Australia was hosted by Monbulk Aquatic Centre on the weekend of Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October.
As the name suggests, the event is a continuous relay for 24 hours whereby a team must have one swimmer in the water at all times.
Throughout the weekend, seven teams competed with a total of 98 swimmers. Teams represented included Nunawading Swim Club, Monbulk Marlins, Monbulk Aquatic Centre Members, Monbulk Aquatic Centre Staff, Halls Outdoor Adventure Company and Hydromaniacs.
In just 24 hours, the swimmers managed to clock over 587 kilometres and raise over $34,000 which will go towards the MS Go for Gold scholarship program.
A huge congratulations to all the swimmers who participated and their supporters including parents, grandparents and partners who cheered their teams on right through the night.
Well done to the winning team Nuna Youth- Platypus that swam 105.8kms and raised an incredible $13,440 and counting.
Many individual achievements were also recognised including Highest Individual Fund-raiser: Daniella Cosentino, Nuna Youth – Platypus – raised $3888, Youth Award: Jesse Collings, Marlins- for his drive and fund-raising effort raising $454, 100 metre sprint: Brendan Smith, Nuna Youth – Narwhals – in 1.02 and Best Dressed Team: Nuna Youth Narwhals took out the award with their unique outfits. Special mention to Member Ships Pirates and Hydromaniacs aliens for their great costume ideas.
A special thank you also to all event volunteers, registrations team, those who cooked the barbecue dinner and breakfast and the lifeguards who kept participants safe as some became weary swimmers.
