THE kids at Kallista Primary School were especially excited for lunchtime this week after the opening of a brand-new playground.
The Parents and Friends Association raised around $20,000 over the period of two years to build the play area, which incorporates natural and upcycled equipment.
School principal Christine Finighan said that the playground was designed to tie in with the inquiry and play-based learning program at the school.
“It’s all about encouraging kids to take risks and challenge themselves physically while in a safe environment.
“We wanted to provide a place for them to use both their fine and gross motor skills and of course have lots of fun.”
Students at the school had significant input into the design of the playground, with representatives from each class putting ideas forward to their Kallista Kids council representatives. The student council then presented the ideas to the school and the PFA.
Ms Finighan said the fund-raising effort to build the playground was an example of the outstanding support for the school.
“The families of our 210 students were right behind the project the whole way. There were walk-a-thons and other fundraisers over the last couple of years to raise the money.”
The playground provides opportunities for students to think creatively, as well as providing a space for physical activity.
“There are lots of nooks and crannies, lots of room for imagination. The whole community is very pleased with the finished product.”
