THE BASIN recorded its seventh successive victory after defeating Upwey Tecoma by 48 runs in Norm Reeves Shield action at the weekend.
Set 288 to win, Upwey stumbled early losing the first four wickets with just 42 runs until the experienced Michael Hewitt (57) formed partnerships with Jake Evans and Damian Berenato to add some respectability to the scoreboard.
Basin skipper Scott Vozzo was back to his best, off the long run, with 3/60 off 21 overs but it was Matthew Heskes who inflicted the early damage – returning 3/52 from 22.
The Bears are chasing their first Division One pennant since 1947 and after seven rounds they are assured of playing finals action, while the Tigers dropped to sixth place on the table.
Knoxfield gave Knox Gardens a fright defending only 140 as the Falcons struggled to get the points winning by three wickets in a low-scoring affair.
After losing the best opening combination of Butcher and Small early on, Knox Gardens dug in with contributions from Steve Alderton, Rhys Marget and Scott McInerney (39 not out) to climb into fourth place on the ladder.
Knights fast bowler Scott McKenzie toiled hard for 2/31 from 22 overs.
Monbulk (223) could not hold Johnson Park who was 1/7 overnight.
The Sharks coasted to victory losing only three wickets for the day as not out batsmen Martin Weightman 57 and premiership captain Andrew Devenish 83, consolidated their position in the four.
At Kings Park, Upper Gully was never a threat chasing 313 set by neighbours Ferntree Gully. The Kings were bundled out for just 147 with Jarrod Bradley and Luke Bowyer sharing the wickets. The Gully Blues are only a game and a half outside the four despite a poor start to the season.
Belgrave batted well at home to Eildon Park scoring 242 in pursuit of an unlikely 370. Simon Hill fell for 67 and Matt Johnson and Aaron Daniel both got starts however the task was made more difficult with the return to form of medium pacer Mick Sinclair who took 3/25.
