Natural surrounds boost health, well-being

The first-class facilities are designed to keep residents active.

NESTLED at the entrance to the Yarra Valley, residents at Lend Lease retirement village, Evelyn Ridge, are experiencing the positive health benefits of living close to nature.
Resident Jane Crawshaw says she participates in a walking group established by the residents, exploring the local rail trail and the local aqueduct.
“We are very lucky to have such a beautiful view of the mountains,” she said.
“On my walks, I like looking out for local eagles, swallows and honey-eaters.
“I do it for fitness and to be social.
“I think it’s important to keep the legs moving.”
Another resident, Max Percy, said he had been experiencing back pain for years, but after moving into Evelyn Ridge, his problems had greatly diminished.
“Before moving into Evelyn Ridge, we were sitting around with nothing to do,” he said.
“Now I go to the gym once a day, to the pool every other day, and do some light walking.
“My health has really improved, it’s marvellous.”
People are genetically wired to need nature.
More and more research now shows that spending time in natural environments has a strong, positive effect on our overall health and well-being.
One important study by scientist Dr Roger Ulrich found that patients in hospitals that had a view of nature out of their window healed faster than other patients.
Other health benefits include lowering blood pressure, reducing pain, strengthening immune systems and reducing risks of many cancers, as well as combating stress, depression and boosting creativity.
Village Manager, Melanie Beavis, said that residents had been taking advantage of the proximity to the Yarra Valley.
“When we get older, our health and well-being becomes an important concern,” she said.
“At the village, we encourage residents to keep active in life, make use of our health facilities, and enjoy the natural surroundings.”
The village opened in 2006, incorporating design features that would support health and well-being into retirement.
Amenities include a bowling green, library, billiard room, spa and indoor pool.
New villas are available.
Anyone interested can visit from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, or on weekends by appointment.
