MOUNTAIN District Christian School was recently awarded 2015 Newcomer of the Year and 2015 Energy Secondary School of the Year at the recent presentation of Resource Smart Education Awards.
A total of 120 schools in Victoria nominated themselves, while 40 schools were short-listed and six schools were presented with awards.
The Monbulk-based school received two awards.
The Resource Smart Education Awards are Victoria’s largest sustainability awards program for schools and early childhood services.
These awards were presented by Stan Krpan from Sustainability Victoria and Paul Geason from Momentum Energy.
The 2015 Newcomer of the Year is awarded to the school that has not nominated themselves before for these awards and has begun to progress in sustainability, and particularly energy and biodiversity.
The 2015 Energy Secondary School of the Year is awarded to the school that shows the most progress in the decrease use of non-renewable energy.
Each entrant aimed to help educate future leaders and ingrain sustainability in the lives of Victorians.
They did this through either helping to reduce waste to landfill, protecting waterways, saving energy, educating the community or enhancing the biodiversity of their school.
