Flying flag for swim safety

By JODIE SYMONDS

SELBY man Paul Hoffman has planned to swim 40 kilometres across the Gippsland Lakes to encourage others to swim between the flags.
With two other men, Mike Gregory and Steve Klugman, the trio will swim from Bairnsdale down the Mitchell River, across Lake King, past Metung and up to Lakes Entrance on Saturday 28 November.
“The purpose of the swim is twofold: raise awareness of the importance of swimming between the flags on patrolled beaches and also to raise funds for the local Gippsland lifesaving clubs that don’t really have any commerce to sustain them,” Mr Hoffman said.
All three men among them have completed the English Channel five times.
Life Saving Victoria, Lakes Entrance SLSC, Seaspray SLSC and Waratah Beach SLSC are also supporting the event.
“Raising awareness for swimming between the flags is a top priority for Venus Bay SLSC,” Venus Bay SLSC president Craig Watson said.
Each club will receive a share of the donations raised by the swim.
