THE new 150 seat spectator grandstand at the Morrison Reserve athletics track in Mount Evelyn is under construction and set to be finished by the end of April.
The new wheelchair-accessible grandstand will provide shading from weather conditions as well as a seating area to watch the sporting competitions.
Brendan Dixon, a coach with Yarra Ranges athletics, said the new grandstand will allow the club to grow further and hold more events.
“The seating will mean our track complies with Athletics Victoria standards and we will be able to grow the club membership as well as hold State Champion competitions,” he said.
“It will open up more opportunities for the club to complete at high levels and will be a great draw card for the town.
Mr Dixon also pointed out that with these upgrades to the club’s facilities, the local schools will also be able to utilise the track properly.
Billanook Ward’s councillor Maria McCarthy said that it was fantastic to have this upgraded facility that served all residents and sporting competitors.
“The project means that this sporting reserve now has the proper shade and seating facilities that our sporting competitors and the community deserve,” Cr McCarthy said.
The new grandstand was made possible by $300,000 supplied by Yarra Ranges Council as part of Recreation and Open Space Strategy that promotes active communities.
