FOOD is Free Tecoma (FIFT) recently celebrated receiving 1000 ‘likes’ on Facebook.
Supporters created a mural of dry and fresh goods to mark this milestone.
The venture was only launched last October but has already had huge support from local residents and people who need a source of free food.
FIFT is a community initiative and collaboration between Tecoma Uniting Church and The Hills Food Frontier assisted with funding from the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
The aim is to reach out into the local community to provide a source of free, healthy, and where possible, organic foods.
Food is stored in a Coolgardie safe on the verandah of Tecoma Uniting Church, 1566 Burwood Highway.
Space is provided for dry goods and fresh produce, and volunteers check the safe regularly.
There is also a message book where people are encouraged to write comments.
The cupboard is never empty.
Community members are encouraged to leave any surplus fruit, vegetables, herbs, seedlings and seeds, and dry goods, and/or take what they need.
