Dandenong Ranges Steiner School student Dakota Rassavong was recognised for her compassion, integrity and kindness at a presentation ceremony for the Fred Hollows Humanity Awards in Melbourne on 26 October.
A national initiative of The Fred Hollows Foundation, the Humanity Award acknowledges Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by demonstrating humanitarian values towards others.
Chair of The Fred Hollows Foundation and former Premier, John Brumby, presented students with their certificates, noting that the students were an inspiration to others, despite being so young.
“These young Victorians have shown confidence, compassion and leadership within their schools and in the wider community,” Mr Brumby said.
“Their care and concern for those around them is an inspiration, not only to their peers, but to their teachers, parents and everyone they meet.”
Dakota was nominated by a staff member at her school, Wendy McMahon, for her incredible support of a school and orphanage in Cambodia.
Dakota supported the school and orphanage by raising more than $150 through busking and saving coins at home.
“Dakota is extraordinarily aware of the suffering of others and how her effort and kindness can make a difference,” Ms McMahon said.
The Fred Hollows Humanity Award began in the ACT in 2012 before expanding into Victoria last year.
This year it became a truly national initiative with 420 children nominated across the country, including 81 students from Victoria.
