They say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
There’s a bit of both at the annual Silvan CFA Trash and Treasure event in December, so be sure to mark it in your diaries.
Taking place on the first weekend of December, the event is the biggest for Silvan CFA and this year promises to deliver all sorts of goodies and paraphernalia.
With a massive selection of trash, treasure, furniture, bric-a-brac, pictures, paintings, garden equipment and much more, there is something for everyone to buy – all at reasonable and cheap prices.
Lieutenant Stuart Pascoe at Silvan CFA invited everyone to come down and grab a bargain, with funds going towards the CFA.
“It’s fund-raising to maintain our equipment,” he said.
“The FCV and this tanker have both been paid for by the community through fund-raising … there’s all sorts of things for people including furniture, bric-a-brac and even right down to agricultural gear, everything.”
As the summer fire season approaches, Stuart also suggested residents who might be concerned or have reservations about their fire plans should come and have a chat with some of the volunteers who might be able to help or offer advice.
“We’ll have bushfire information and welcome residents to come down and ask our volunteers any questions they may have – we can help with things like their fire plans.”
Behind the scenes though, Stuart said the brigade still needed some more daytime responders.
He said the old perception that fire-fighters were required to be super-fit was a myth and that the role had changed to include people from all walks of life.
“All sorts of jobs, we do hazardous, search and rescue … we deal with a multitude of things, it’s not just fires,” he said.
“We sometimes help SES for floods and are called upon for all different types of emergencies.”
“There’s also non-operational roles, you can help with fund-raising and other community involvement events.”
Those interested are welcome to drop in on a Wednesday night at 8pm at Silvan CFA, or can come to the Trash and Treasure event.
The event starts at 8am on Saturday 2 December and runs until the Sunday afternoon.
Donations of saleable goods can be dropped off at the station on a Wednesday evening from 8pm, or for larger items or quantities that require pick-up ring 9737 9127.
