Joey jubilation

The first Kallista Scouts Group has just launched its very first Joey Scout Mob, which caters to children aged 5-7-years-old.

Already the addition to the scouting group is growing quickly, and the ‘Mail’ spoke to Volunteer Scout Leader, Tony McTackett about the opportunities it offers young kids.

“With Joey scouts the key thing is to have fun,” Mr McTackett said.

“It’s getting to learn about them, the environment, and there are also a number of badges which they earn.”

“We play games, go out and visit science works … we’re also hoping to go to the mount Burnett Observatory.”

“It’s really an introduction to scouting.”

With the addition of Joey Scouts, the age range at Kallista Scouts Group goes from 5-25-years-old.

Unlike older age groups, where the emphasis is on individual badges, Mr McTackett said that the Joey’s primarily promote teamwork.

Joey’s do badge work by participating as a mob and as a team … so it’s learning the basics of teamwork

This term with another Monbulk joey badge, buddy badge buddying up with them, meeting with them and doing things together

The Joey’s though aren’t just for kids and Mr McTackett said the parents often became involved too.

“The parents certainly become involved too, and pretty keen to do so.

“It’s not just a babysitting service but an involvement for the whole family.”

The 1st Kallista Joey Scout Mob meets on Monday nights during school terms from 5.45 to 6.45 pm at The Patch Hall, 5 The Patch Rd, The Patch.
