The peaceful surrounds of the Dandenongs provide a perfect backdrop for practicing the ancient arts of tai chi and qigong.
Students from Chi Generation, which runs classes in Upwey, Belgrave and Tecoma and weekend retreats in Warburton, were among the winners at the 20th Wushu Tai Chi and Qigong Festival held at Monash University in August.
With local and interstate competitors from 15 schools, ranging in ages from 8 to 84 years old, the festival aimed to develop tai chi and qigong, the martial and healing arts across Australia.
“It is a really big challenge to a lot of people to get up on a stage and compete but it gives a big boost to their confidence and self-esteem,” Su Rule from Chi Generation said.
Her school entered students in group and individual events and came home with three gold and one silver medal for their performances.
These skills are usually practiced in quiet settings, so Ms Rule said the festival’s noisy atmosphere was a strong test of the entrants’ ability to maintain focus and concentration.
