Shane Warne honored at MCG memorial

Thousands of fans attended Shane Warne’s state memorial on Wednesday 30 March at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The service commenced with a minute silence, Welcome to Country and the Australian National Anthem performed by Greta Bradman.

Mr Warne was honoured by video tributes and live performances from international artists including Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Chris Martin, Robbie Williams, John Stevens and Anthony Callea.

Celebrity guests in attendance included high Jackman, Eric Bana, Russell Crowe and Kelly Slater. Cricket greats like Allan Border, former teammates and rivals all spoke at the memorial honouring the career and life of Mr Warne.

Eddie Maguire was master of ceremonies, and Mr Warne’s father Keith and brother Jason also spoke at the event.

The Service concluded with Mr Warne’s children Brooke, Jackson and Summer unveiling the newly named Shane Warne Stand at the MCG.

Mr Warne passed away aged 52 from a heart attack while on holiday in Thailand. He is considered one of Australia’s greatest ever cricketers, creating memories throughout his career like the Ashes hat trick at the MCG, his 700th test wicket on Boxing Day and his famous ball of the century in 1993.

After first playing for Australia in 1992, he played 145 tests and 194 one-day internationals, taking over 1000 wickets in the process.
