A $355 million upgrade to Westfield Knox will feature a full-sized community basketball court for locals to use once completed.
Scentre Group, which owns Westfield, announced the NBL specified court on Thursday 12 May.
Scentre Group Regional Manager Michelle Clarkson said they would be introducing the outdoor basketball court after input from customers as a part of their investment in the centre.
“The introduction of the basketball court reinforces our commitment to delivering a world-class retail, social and lifestyle destination that caters to the interests and needs of our local community,” she said.
“The basketball court is something we know customers will get a lot of excitement and enjoyment from, whether that’s gathering to watch games or playing with friends and family.”
The court will be used by Knox Basketball — the local basketball association — for training, competitions and clinics for junior players.
Knox Basketball chief executive officer Grant Harrison said basketall ins one of the most popular sports in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and the association is one of the largest in the country.
“With over 1,000 teams competing every week, having access to this court at Westfield Knox gives our junior teams a place to come together and play in the heart of the community.” he said.
The court will be located next to Knox Library.
Stage two of the upgrades to Westfield Knox are expected to be completed by 2023, which will see the opening of the basketball court and a new 1,700 square metre community space.
