ST JOSEPH’S College teaching and curriculum is designed to cater for boys’ learning preference.
The teachers’ expertise in dealing with boys enables them to open up pathways for every student’s future.
One of the key initiatives to assist boys in reaching their full potential is the Lighthouse Program.
Developed in conjunction with a cluster of primary schools in the surrounding area, the Lighthouse Program is an innovative scheme for the college’s most talented year 10 literacy students. It involves them visiting grade five and six students one morning a week during the Lighthouse elective period and teaching a variety of literacy-based programs.
The program is by selection only and is based on a student’s level of academic literacy, emotional maturity and specific literacy skills in one or more of four areas: debating, drama, IT, media and writing.
To assist boys in developing the skills necessary to teach such a program in primary schools, the college’s head of English, Angela Torelli, leads the students through a program focusing on reciprocal teaching methods and other important literacy modelling programs.
The Lighthouse Program benefits students by challenging and extending them across a variety of curriculum areas.
For more information on this or any other programs offered by St Joseph’s College, contact Tegan Hilet on 9758 2000 or visit the college’s next open day on 10 May between 9.30 and 11am.
