ROWVILLE batsmen Burgman and Ross added 229 for the fourth wicket after a slow start against the Belgrave Magpies on the opening day of round six in the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association.
The Hawks were held early to be 3/70 from 42 tight overs at tea. However, it was Ross (130 not out) who dominated after the break to smash the Pies attack reaching a mammoth 5/342 at stumps.
Tate Burgman, arguably Rowville’s best batsman, remained unbeaten on 120 as the Magpies will chase their third sub-300 total in six matches.
It was all smooth sailing for the skippers at Monbulk where host captain Jason Fraser reverting back to his off spin took 5/28 against Knoxfield with counterpart Trent Scholfield running out of partners, stranded on 72 not out in a total of only 144.
Monbulk lost two wickets prior to stumps to be 2/43 in what should be a return to the winners circle.
Upper Gully’s Nathan Chrystal worked up some early pace with the ball at Batterham Park against The Basin, who batted all day for a slow 160.
Chrystal and Dave Goodger took three wickets apiece whilst 16-year-old Jayden Turcinovic top scored with 45.
Eildon Park crashed through top side Johnson Park for 112 and is 3/38 in reply.
The Sharks rely too heavily on top order Gaunt, Samaraweera and Mal Francis who was defiant with 62.
Ferntree Gully restricted St John’s Tecoma to 7/130, however, a rearguard action by Parlby (36) and Danny Pearce (40*) saw the Saints reach a competitive 210 at the close of play.
Mountain Gate’s skipper Athula Samarasekera scored another ton (124) despite straining a hamstring last week, against Upwey at HV Jones Reserve.
The Gators put together 233 with Paul Wilson (5/43) the only bowler to penetrate.
Highlights in the Decoite Shield were centuries to Knox’s Gary Maslen against The Basin and young Eildon Park keeper Nathan Hicks against Johnson Park after being dismissed for 98 the previous match.
