Sing out to fight cancer

– Tania Martin
THE Dandenong Ranges Sing Australia Choir says there is a link between finding a cure for cancer and singing.
They are now singing to raise awareness of the power of song and to raise cash for breast cancer research.
Choir member Christine Ellerton said there was evidence to suggest that the power of song could help reduce the effects of cancer and in some cases provides a cure.
Ms Ellerton said that the Dandenong Ranges choir recently joined choirs from across the country on Sunday 17 February to launch a new awareness campaign called Wade in the Water.
Wade in the Water director Linette Etheredge said the national launch of the campaign was a great opportunity to spread the message that singing was great for all communities and the individuals they support.
“It’s also a great platform to raise awareness and funds for the Breast Cancer Network of Australia,” she said.
Ms Ellerton said the launch was a fantastic fundraising event and that the choir raised more than $300.
She said the choir also got the chance to watch a short documentary that told the story of cancer survivor Debi Candlish and how she used singing to aid her treatment and recovery.
Ms Ellerton said singing had an amazing power to heal and was a great way to meet new people.
“It (singing) has great benefits not only for your health but helps to form friendships and is a great way to have fun,” she said.
Ms Ellerton said the choir meets every Thursday at the Tecoma Uniting Church from 7.30pm and everyone is welcome.
She said the choir was always looking for new members and that there is no need to audition.
“People who enjoy singing in the show should come along and join us,” Ms Ellerton said.
“The only criterion is that you have to have a desire to sing.”
Anyone interested in joining the choir should contact Carole McKenzie on 9801 4661 and join in the fun.
