Shire plea to be careful picking pets

CARDINIA Shire Council is warning residents there is more to finding the perfect puppy than just the cutest face in the shop window.
Shire local laws manager Alan Giachin said people needed to think more carefully when purchasing the family pet.
He said picking pets carefully and looking after them properly was the key to a happy relationship between dog and owner.
This warning comes after the council recently received a number of inquiries from residents about what type of breeds could be restricted from registration.
Some breeds are restricted under State Government legislation, including pit bulls.
But Mr Giachin warned that any dog was potentially capable of attacking, regardless of size or breed.
“Council has found the most effective measure to reduce dog attacks is taking a pro-active approach in encouraging residents to choose pets according to what best suits their lifestyle and environment.”
Mr Giachin said choosing the right dog was an important decision not only for the owners but neighbours and the dog.
He said it was important for all dog owners to act responsibly and buy the pet that is right for them.
